FACE BRICK
1.—Face Brick—The following surfaces shall bes faced with (state manufacturer’s or dealer’s name and trade designation).

2—-Window window sills shall be (state name

8—Parapets and Fire Walls—All parapets and fire walls
above flat roofs shall be of (state name of brick if not same as facing) face brick laid in 1-2 cement mortar.
4—Copings—All copings shall be of (state name of brick if not same as facing) face brick set as per drawings in 1-2 cement mortar, with smooth finished joints.
5—Cement Mortar—All mortar for face brick work in (state part of work) shall be composed of 1 part Portland Cement to 2, 214, or 3 parts sand (state kind).
6—Lime Mortar—All mortar for face brick work in
(state part of work) shall be composed of 1 part lime putty or hydrated lime to 2, 2!(2, or 3 parts sand (state kind).
7—Cement-Lime Mortar—All mortar for face brick work in (state part of work) shall be composed of 1 part Portland Cement, 1 part lime putty or hydrated lime, and 6 parts of sand (state kind). No cement or cement-lime mortar that has set on the boards overnight is to be retempered and used.
8—Mortar Color—All mortar for face brick in (state
part of work) shall be mixed with (state amount, brand, anti color) mortar color per thousand brick.
0—Laying—(a) All brick shall be laid on a full bed of mortar (for joints over ifie in.).
or (b) All brick (with joints ifie in. or less) shall be thoroughly buttered.
All brick (except with buttered joints) shall be shoved into place and all vertical joints thoroughly filled.
In (state parts of wall) the space between successive- tiers of brick shall be (state whether slushed or left unslushed). Vertical joints, up and down the wall (in all bonds except running and common) shall be plumbed.
SPECIFICATIONS
When temperature is below freezing or likely to fall below during the night, tell materials including water, shall be heated before using.
No brick with ice or snow on them and no frozen mortar shall be used. The mixing of salt in the mortar to check freezing is absolutely prohibited, At no time shall the face brick be carried more than approximately six courses above the backing, and both shall be brought to a level every night and well covered with building paper, planks, or the like to protect against damage by the elements.
10—Joints—All brick work in (state part of work) shall be laid with (state width and kind of mortar joint).
11—Bond—All face brick in (state part of work) shall be laid in (state kind of bond).
Masonry Construct ion—- Face brick shall be bonded
to backing every course with full headers,
or (b) Face brick shall be bonded to backing with heavy (state kind) galvanized iron wall ties.
Veneer ConAtruetion—(a) Face brick veneer shall be bonded to frame wall with 30-d nails driven through the sheathing, slightly above the level of the brick, into each stud approximately every foot in height and bent down so as to extend level into the joint at least one inch.
or (b) Faces brick veneer shall be bonded to frame with heavy (state kind) galvanized iron wall ties securely nailed to the sheathing 16 inches apart, every foot in height.
12—Fireplaces—The fireplace shall be faced with (name) brick laid as per drawings, with (state kind, size, and color) joints en (state kind) mortar. The hearth shall be of (name) brick laid as per drawings in a 1-3 cement mortar, colored to match the brick, with a flush ,4 in. joint finished smooth. Back hearth and lining shall be of refractory brick laid as per details, with a narrow joint in fire clay.
13—Cleaning and Pointing—When plasterer has left building, all surfaces of face brick shall be thoroughlyV cleaned down by applying a fi per cent solution of muriatic acid with a stiff wire brush to remove all spots and stains, and then rinse with clean water. All defective joints shall be carefully pointed up at this time.
14—Brick Walks, Terraces, etc.—(a) Upon a cushion of sand 1 in. thick shall be laid (name) face brick, placed (state on edge or flat) with (state size) joints, in pattern shown on plans. Joints shall be filled with a 1-2 cement grout. Before any surplus grout has set too hard on the surface of the bricks it shall be thoroughly cleaned of with a slightly wet stiff brush.
or (b) Joints shall be filled with dry sand swept into place and wet down until joints are thoroughly filled.
