Patents and License
The manufacture and sale of Cinder Concrete Building Units is protected by United States Patent No. 1,212,840 to Francis J. Straub, and United States Patent No. 1,466,083, to Sigurd Bo. Other patents pending. The Straub patent has been broadly sustained by unanimous decision of the United States Court of Appeals. All plants work under license agreement with NATIONAL BUILDING UNITS CORPORATION.
Advantages
*Economical*—The lightness of the product effects a 20 to 40% saving over common brick, and 5 to 15% saving over clay tile. One 8×8× 16-in, block displaces 12 brick and requires about one-quarter the mortar. Plaster is applied direct to cinder block, and the trueness of the wall, together with the texture, facilitate the application. No nailing strips or plugs are necessary. Other economies will be found under other subheadings.
*Strong*—Cinder Concrete Building Units have a crushing strength of more than 800 lbs. per sq. in. of gross area. Tests of Cinder Block walls at Columbia University show that the material has the highest structural efficiency of any masonry building units.
*Tough*—The product is not brittle; will stand rough handling without breakage.
*Light*—From 30% to 40% lighter than sand concrete. The hollow units are 50% to 60% lighter than brick. This speeds up the laying and reduces the dead load of the wall.
*Fireproof*—There is no masonry material of greater fire resistance. This has been brought out by official tests made for the National Board of Fire Underwriters as well as by many demonstrations and actual fires. Damp Proof—No moist tire is drawn through the wall. Dryness is assured, and it is safe to plaster direct without furring or lathing. Through mortar joints should be avoided; mortar should be applied on the outside and inside webs only, and not on the cross webs.
*Time Proof*—Age increases the strength of Cinder Concrete Building Units. They are not affected by freezing or temperature changes. This is due to the toughness and the cellular structure of the material.
*Insulating*—The material has a cork-like structure which gives the wall a high degree of insulation. This economy of heating, is conducive to the comfort of the house, and prevents dampness in the walls.
Sound Proof—Cinder Concrete Building Units have •1 high degree of sound absorption, and reduce the reflectiop. and transmission of sound. They are extensively used in sc\tools, hospitals, churches and the like, where the acoustic’elesign is of particular importance.
Nailing—As good as wood for nailing; holding power is equal to yellow pine. Nails never rust. This means the elimination of all nailing blocks.
*Easily Cut*—Cinder Concrete Building Units are furnished ill all fractions. They can, however, be readily cut and they can be chased and channeled for pipe and conduits without fracture.
